The most basic ingredients in this dish are glutinous rice, peanuts, shiitake mushrooms, and salted duck egg yolk. For vegetarians, it is traditional to only include peanuts and some tofu products, which is not unpalatable. It is usually called "Cai Zong". There is also a sweet bean paste filling called "Tian Zong".


The northern part is steamed with steam, which tastes harder, while the southern part is boiled in water and the taste is softer.


There are also many changes in the ingredients for the bread, chestnuts, abalone and other ingredients can be included, but the price will be more expensive depending on the expensive ingredients.


Some people will buy cooked ones (the cotton rope and bamboo leaves outside are not removed) and store them in the freezer. When they want to eat, they will use steam to heat them.


The old-fashioned traditional breakfast will be served with Zhu Xie Tang and Rou Zong together.
